Since data in Ram is only available for as long as the computer is running, it is no longer available after you reboot it. One interesting option that ImDisk makes available is the option to save the contents of the RamDisk to your hard drive or another connected storage location. While basic, it will highlight that Ram usage goes up when you move data into the dynamic Ram disk, and down again when it gets deleted or moved out. You can monitor Ram usages using the Windows Task Manager for example. If you check the "Allocate Memory Dynamically" option, memory will be allocated dynamically based on use. Moreover, when using a RAM drive, the operating system can not reclaim the RAM for anything else.Here you select the total size of the disk in Kilobyte, Megabyte or Gigabyte, and other parameters such as the drive letter that you want it to use, or the file system. If the operating system needs that RAM for another function, then it discards the cached data. Modern operating systems store cache data in RAM automatically so that it can be retrieved quickly. This is not to say that using a RAM drive for caches is a good thing. This can be a significant negative when the shutdown is unexpected, but if you choose to save your app caches (such as a browser cache) or other sensitive data to a RAM drive, you can easily set the software to ensure it will be wiped when you power down your PC.
There are also potential security advantages because RAM is erased when a computer's power supply is cut off. RAM also generates less heat, and it isn't susceptible to wear over time, nor does it have the finite limit on read/write cycles that physical drives have. These can all be slow and unwieldy to work with, especially on a hard drive, so the added speed of a RAM drive will be noticeable instantly.
